Fields of Activity
In addition to the "classical" determination of static and dynamic material and component properties, the determination of mechanical properties at high temperatures is an important research focus. Several devices for destructive material testing are available in the mechanical testing laboratory.
- Material development and characterization of high entropy alloysHide

High entropy alloys (HEA for short) are new, chemically disordered alloy systems which form a solid solution with at least five constitutional elements. In order to exploit the great potential of HEA, both for the analysis options of material science as well as for possible high-tech applications, precise knowledge of the fundamental material behaviour (microstructure, deformation, mechanical properties) is essential.
In the DFG project GL 181 / 56-2, in cooperation with the Ernst Ruska Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C) at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), selected HEAs are prepared, mechanically tested and microanalytically characterized. In addition to cubic (fcc, bcc) lattice structures, the main focus is on HEA made of rare earth (RE) elements with hexagonal close packed (hcp) crystal lattice structures. The strong tendency of RE hcp HEA to oxidize has to be considered during manufacturing and preparation. The great chemical similarity of the rare earths enables in particular the analysis of the Gibbs Paradox on the basis of the dislocation-induced deformation of these model systems.

- Entropy effect on mechanical properties of high entropy alloys. Hide

High entropy alloys (HEA) consist of at least 5 elements with nearly equal atomic concentration (equiatomic). They differ from conventional alloys because of the missing main element. This opens up a new class of alloys and new fields of applications. With regard to the mechanical properties, the HEA show extraordinary properties.
The aim of this research project is to investigate the effects of entropy on the mechanical properties of single-phase HEA with different crystal structures over a wide temperature range. This is being realised together with the Jülich Research Centre. The project is part of the DFG priority programme "Compositionally Complex Alloys - High Entropy Alloys (CCA-HEA)" (SPP 2006).

Development of a platinum alloy for the luxury sector
In cooperation with the Swiss semi-finished products manufacturer Varinor, a new alloy for the production of watches and jewelry was developed in the course of a promotion.In addition to numerous requirements such as wear resistance and castability, high optical demands were also placed on the new alloy. The brightness and shine of the polished surface is ultimately the decisive criterion when selling the jewelry.
