Metals and Alloys

The Chair of Metals and Alloys was founded in June 1997 and is part of the Faculty of Applied Science (Fakultät für Angewandte Naturwissenschaften, FAN) of the University of Bayreuth. The three main tasks of the chair are: university education, research and transfer of technology.

Education

At the Chair of Metals and Alloys, engineers are trained with international orientation. Students have the possibility to choose between Master and Diploma degree and benefit from contacts to different international institutes to gain work experience abroad. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports exchange programs. Apart from tertiary education the chair trains material tester (Apprenticeship).

Research and Transfer of Technology

The Chair of Metals and Alloys maintains a lot of colaboration with industrial partners. Based on experimental and theoretical knowledge, different process technologies can be realized. The aim is to transfer the knowledge on materials into saleable products. Focal points of the research activities are fundamental, industry related and mission oriented research. The main topics of the research fields are high temperature alloys, application-oriented lightweight construction, material processing with lasers, joining of materials, microstructural analysis, modeling and simulation of alloys and materials testing. The available equipment is state of the art. For a professional counseling, advice on patents, proposals and contract research please contact Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Glatzel or Dr.-Ing. Rainer Völkl.
